shouldnt there be a really rich collection of books encoraging study of scriptural truths ?
I mean you are talking about several sized bookstores and a rich history of the bible going into English

Sanskrit and Tamil
The six most ancient languages in the world are Sanskrit, Tamil, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and Latin. All these six are classical languages as well. Of these six classical languages Tamil and Sanskrit are the two classical languages, which flourished in India since very ancient times.
Sanskrit, the mother of all European languages and of many Indian languages is as old as the hills. The exact antiquity of Sanskrit cannot be established with any degree of certainty. This is because, we have written records only for the past 5000 years. Therefore, history beyond that period is in the realm of fancy and conjecture. The Rig Veda, the oldest among the Vedas is said to be 10,000 years old, if not older. But, there are no written records to prove this fact. But, the fact remains that Sanskrit was the lingua franca of India for thousands of years.
Sanskrit is the foundation of Hinduism. In fact, it can be said without fear of contradiction that without Sanskrit, there is no Hinduism. The four Vedas and the Upanishads, the Brahma-Sutra written by Veda Vyasa, the two epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and the Bhagavad-Gita which forms part of the Mahabharata are all in Sanskrit. Sanskrit literature is one of the richest in the world. The number of standard works in Sanskrit is mind-bogging and runs into several hundreds.
Sanskrit is a veritable storehouse of knowledge and there are standard text-books in it in all faculties or disciplines including science, technology, mathematics, astrology, astronomy, botany, medicine etc. So, it is not as if Sanskrit is literature alone, including devotional literature and nothing else. It is gratifying that the Government of India is doing its level best to promote the learning of Sanskrit in India, including spoken Sanskrit The greatness and glory of Sanskrit must spread throughout the world. This is possible only if all the important works in Sanskrit are translated into English.
I shall now give a brief resume of Tamil literature. If there is any Indian language which is equal to Sanskrit it is Tamil only and not any other Indian language for that matter. Sanskrit is a match for Tamil. Conversely, Tamil is a match for Sanskrit in grandeur and greatness.
It is difficult to say how old Tamil is. But, it is the considered opinion of Dr.M.Varadarajan, an outstanding Tamil scholar that it is 25,000 years old. It has a vast repertoire of classical works. The earliest extant classic in Tamil is, of course, Tolkappiam, which is said to be 5000 years old. But, there are references in Tamil literature about works earlier to Tolkappiam, but these have been irretrievably lost to posterity. Generally speaking Silappadigaram, Chintamani, Manimekalai, Valayapathi and Gundalakesi are considered as five great classics in Tamil literature, of which the last two have been lost to posterity. But, the greatest classic in Tamil literature is undoubtedly Kamba Ramayanam, an epic poem of around 12,000 verses, written in grandiose style. The number of literary works in Tamil is legion. And each literary work has a distinctive flavor of its own. For example, Villibharatam, excels in the use of choice diction and resonant rhymes while Kalingathu Bharani glorifies heroism on the battlefield. There are also several devotional works in Tamil like Devaram, Tiruvachagam, Thiruppavai, Tiruvembavai, Nalayirathu Divya Prabandam, Thiru Arutpa and Thiruppugazh, to mention only a few among them. This is because piety has been the hallmark of Tamils since antinquity.
One of the greatest works in Tamil which is of timeless value is, of course, Tirukkural, containing nuggets of wisdom. There are several commentaries on it, but that by Parimalazhagar is regarded as the best by erudite scholars. Modern students of Tamil literature can make profitable use of the rendition of the Tirukkural into simple prose by Dr.M.Varadarajan, a name to conjure with Tamil literature. His work Kallo Kaviyamo is a masterpiece, which has won wide acclaim.
The history of Tamil literature can be divided into two periods namely Tamil literature before the advent of British rule and Tamil literature after the establishment of the British rule in India.
Before the British set foot on our soil, Tamil literature had a stunted and lopsided growth. There was superabunclant poetry, a small amount of turgid prose and little else.
The renaissance of Tamil language/ literature took place only during the British regime. "Fruit of the Spirit" is a biblical term that sums up the nine visible attributes of a true Christian life. Fruit of the Spirit – The Nine Biblical Attributes
The fruit of the Spirit is a physical manifestation of a Christian’s transformed life. In order to mature as believers, we should study and understand the attributes of the fruit:
Love – "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him" (1 John 4:16). Through Jesus Christ, our greatest goal is to do all things in love. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails" (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).
Joy – "The joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10). "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God" (Hebrews 12:2).
Peace – "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13).
Longsuffering (patience) — We are "strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness" (Colossians 1:11). "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love" (Ephesians 4:2).
Gentleness (kindness) — We should live "in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left" (2 Corinthians 6:6-7).
Goodness – "Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power" (2 Thessalonians 1:11). "For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth" (Ephesians 5:9).
Faith (faithfulness) – "O Lord, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth" (Isaiah 25:1). "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith" (Ephesians 3:16-17).
Meekness – "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted" (Galatians 6:1). "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love" (Ephesians 4:2).
Temperance (self-control) – "But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love" (2 Peter 1:5-7

Difference between theology major and religious studies?
I am thinking about switching my major to the study of religions, but the more I look into theology the more I sense that it’s for religious people planning on working through the church. I am non-religious and want to study religions, their histories, their effect on societies and cultures, etc…
I’m thinking that might just be religious studies as opposed to theology. Does anyone have any insight to this? Has anyone majored in religious studies and/or theology and know the difference?

How can you have a prayer said for a deceased during mass?
My mother who is deceased, her anniversary is coming up next week. I want to have my church (catholic) say prayer on her behalf during Sunday mass. I have seen this done before. How can I have them do this for my mother?
Call your parish office and make the request.
Most people offer the church a donation when they make a request like this.

Is prayer asking God to change natural law on behalf of oneself or others?
I’m a little confused about some ideas on prayer such as the admonition to go into a closet to pray and God knows what you need before you pray. If God knows what we need and He has established a natural order of things and is all powerful, wise and loving, do we really need to pray? Isn’t prayer just a request to upset the apple cart?
You ask a very good question.
Going into a closet to pray is the illustration God uses in Scripture because, in Bible times, self-righteous religious folk would sometimes make a spectacle of themselves by praying in public so others might see how "pious" they were. That did not please God.
Then, of course, the Almighty, Infinite God knows all about us; hence, He knows what we need — and not only that, but what we will need at all times and at any given point in our lives.
You inquire, next, about God overriding His own laws. Yes, sometimes God does supersede His own laws. He knows all about everything and, therefore, knows all the ramifications of such interference. We humans cannot possibly know all of those things. And if He does choose to override natural laws which He, Himself, has set in place — commonly called " miracles" — you can be sure He knows exactly what He is doing.
But . . . all of this deals with the OUTSIDE world, circumstances outside of the individual.
So, now I must ask you. Have you ever considered that perhaps prayer is not only about things and “outside” circumstances but is also about what prayer does for, and to, us — deep INSIDE our own hearts?
The Bible states in Romans 8:28 that “All things work together for good to them who are the called according to His purpose.” But the thought doesn’t stop there. Verse 29 continues . . . “that we may be conformed to the image of His Son.”
Wow! Think about that!
God wants us to think like Him! To think like His Son, Jesus. We are told to have “the mind of Christ.” He desires that we become like Him.
Now, please think of your best friend. How did you become friends? By spending time together. How do you get to know your God? The same way. By spending time with Him.
As you spend time with your friend — and, likewise, as you spend time with your God — you get to know the personality of each. You learn how they think.
There are many reasons to pray — and most of them are good. Many of us pray to God in times of trouble. But how many do you suppose pray to Him in the good times — or just to talk with Him? Do you suppose spending time in the presence of the Almighty God might effect a change in a person’s heart? In their outlook on life? Especially if this individual began to thank God for all He has done? Even praise Him? (Do you think this focus might change any one of us for the better? )
This is not just a mental or spiritual exercise. There really is a Person at the other end of our prayers.
Surely, then, we can pray for those things which we need in our lives. God does answer those prayers; sometimes Yes, sometimes No, sometimes Wait.
But maybe — just maybe — prayer is not only about changing “things.” Perhaps it is also — maybe even a whole lot more — about changing us! : )

Can you help me interpret this dream? I have some ideas below…?
I dreamt that I was gisele bundchen… and I was with 2 or 3 other models and we were moving forward, I think with a car. Nobody in the world made more money than me, but I lost my perfect poise a couple of times and had to move in other directions. What I did was extremely difficult (poising in perfect position for 14 hours a day) and that’s why I made so much money.
Then I went to a farm to visit my boyfriend but he wouldn’t give me a ride home… and I thought that the route that takes you out of the farm was too long… so I made a right turn to see if I could get there faster through the right lane and discovered after walking for a while that it was blocked, but I was too tired to go back and try to find the right way back… so I asked again and once again he refused to give me a ride home.
Then I went to my ex-boyfriend’s house and dropped by on his doorstep crying saying that I had lost so much weight and wanted him to give me noather ahnce (gained 90 pounds over the course of our relationship) and well his younger brother came out to greet us… but my ex-boyfriend never said anything to me.
And then I was going to an indian town…. and in the middle of the town, on the side of the street…. There was a small store, that I entered into, and then was taken care of by an indian man… that’s all I remember.

What would be a good Bible verse for my Sign Language group?
I am the head of the sign language group for the Baptist Collegiate Ministries at my college. The group is called Speechless. I have been trying to find a good bible verse for out group, but have been having some trouble.
I respect what you’re trying to do. The bible, I’m sure, has many options, but I found three that may be close to what you seek.
Mk:13:4: Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
I like Mk 13:4 because it signifies the meaningfulness of signs and not speech.
1Jn:1:5: This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John’s message is also relevant (to me) because it sends a message that requires no speech and actually removes the importance of speech.
Galatians 6:6: Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
Galatians has always been a favorite of mine and I like the choice of ‘communicate’ that crosses all barriers.
So, there are likely better choices, but these three I found touching and challenging. good luck .

How do you translate a bible verse from English to the Thai language. Any Thai people on here?
I want to translate the bible verse, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," Hebrew 11:1 into the Thai scripture. Can any Thai person help me to translate it to the Thai language?
