i mean if ramadan this year will be on 22 august which is saturday , then the first taraweeh prayer will be on the 21 which is friday ?( the night that is before first day of ramadan ) or 22 after having our breakfast ?

Praise be to Allaah.

It is prescribed for the Muslim to perform Taraaweeh prayer after ‘Isha’ on the first night of Ramadaan, which is the night on which the new moon is sighted or the Muslims complete thirty days of Sha’baan.

Similarly at the end of Ramadaan, Taraaweeh prayer should not be offered if it is proven that the month has ended, either by sighting of the new moon of Eid or if the month of thirty days has been completed.

It is clear that Taraaweeh prayer is not connected to the fast during the day in Ramadaan, rather it is connected to the onset of the month at night in the beginning, and the last day of Ramadaan at the end.

We should not say that Taraaweeh prayer is a naafil prayer and it is permissible to offer it on any night and in congregation, because taraaweeh prayer is limited to the month of Ramadaan, and those who offer this prayer are seeking the reward that comes for praying it. The ruling on offering this prayer in congregation is different from the ruling on offering other prayers in congregation. In Ramadaan it is permissible to pray taraaweeh in congregation on each night, whilst announcing it and encouraging others to join, unlike qiyaam at other times, where praying qiyaam in congregation is not part of the Sunnah unless it is done without having the intention beforehand, or it is done for the purpose of encouraging and teaching others. So it is Sunnah to do it sometimes without committing to doing it all the time or persisting in that.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

Taraaweeh at times other than Ramadaan is an innovation (bid’ah). For example, if the people wanted to gather to pray qiyaam in congregation in the mosque at times other than Ramadaan, this would be an innovation.

There is nothing wrong with a person praying in congregation in his house occasionally at times other than Ramadaan, because this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did. Once he led Ibn ‘Abbaas, and once Ibn Mas’ood and once Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamaan, in prayer in his house, but he did not adopt that as a regular Sunnah and he did not do that in the mosque.

Al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 4/60, 61

Based on this, whoever offers Taraaweeh prayers before it is proven that Ramadaan has begun is like one who offers a Prayer at the wrong time. No reward will be written for him, even if he is free of the sin of doing that deliberately.

And Allaah knows best

I want to specialize in theology, but i also want to be well biblically based.what would be the best degree outline?

well if your plan is for a PhD then it really doesn’t matter what you get your BA, but you should have a few core courses in Theology/Religion/biblical studies. I would suggest getting a really broad but strong BA so it shows you know more than just 1 thing. also, if u havent even started your BA now, be prepared to change your mind as to what u want to do a PhD in cause things change, plans change, interests change. but good for you for thinking about this already! Good luck.

I would just like to say that I am a Christian and I have always believed that Baptism is necessary to become a Christian. I am not going to use this information to put anyone’s beliefs down. I do not believe that is a Christian thing to do. I am very accepting of other’s beliefs and yet, I would like to study the scriptural references fully to see why people believe this.

PLEASE DO NOT be rude to others on this topic. I always read and study every person’s answer and try my best to write each person a note and personally thank them for their time and answers. Have a wonderful week!

Mobius,
You say there is no requirement of baptism but I find a few that seem to point to it’s importance:
Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us–baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Thank You…

MY FRIENDS,
I do not necessarily agree with some of these answers but that does not mean that I will ever give a thumbs down. What a person believes is their right in my opinion. I read and study the BIBLE each and every day that I am able to do so and have for several years now. Please refrain from hurting others when it is not necessary! As a Christian we are supposed to "Love our neighbors" according to CHRIST. HE is the one who we should be listening to the most.
Thank You

Hello my friend. I hope you are doing well. I hope you do not nind a pagan answering this question.

There is no scripture that says faith only is what it takes in fact as you know James 2:17 says fiath without works is dead being alone.

People take the scriptures out of context because that is how they are taught they take scripture written to the people already saved, already baptized and take it to mean this is what you do to be saved.

Just like Acts 16:30 by itself without reading the whole story it appears that baptism is not required, but the story is of a jailor who was watching Paul and when he thought Paul had escaped he was going to kill himself. Yes, he was told to believe on the lord Jesus Christ, but that was not all he was told. How do I know because you read further and you find thatin verse32 they spoke to him and all his house verse 33 And he took them the same hour and washed their stripes and was baptized.

You see Paul did not just merely say all you have to do is believe but he said to believe then he taught the man and all his family then after teaching them the man was baptized.

If Paul and his companions meant that baptism was not essential then he was teaching a different gospel than what he had recieved. In Acts 2:37 the people asked Peter and the other men what must we do to be saved and in Acts 2:38 Peter told them to repent and be baptized.

As you pointed out Jesus said in Mark 16:16 that baptism is essentail he that believes and is baptized shall be saved but he that believes not shall be damned.

Paul wrote in Galations 1:8,9 that if we or an angel from heaven teach any other gospel than that which ye have recieved let him be accursed.

Knowing how Paul felt and knowing what Jesus said about Baptism how could Paul teach baptism is not essential for salvation? People get confused because they read you have to believe, but neglect to read what follows belief.

I have left Christianity on my own knowing full well that if I am wrong in my belief change then I will wake up one day in hell, but if the bible is right and if there is only one God and if there is a Satan fighting against God would not the best strategy in this war against God be to convince the majority of Christians that baptism is not essential for salvation and that it does not matter what doctrine one follows?

I have a NIV study bible and in one of the footnoots about baptism being essential the modern scholar says that the writers of the New Testament and Paul and Peter and those who were suppossed to be in the know were confused when they taught baptism was essential. His theory is that baptism followed belief so slosely that Peter, and Paul and other writers weres simply confused. I had to wonder how a modern 20th centruy scholar was more in the know than those who had seen and been taught by Jesus himself.

Why do these Christians keep believing that the only way to get to heaven is through Jesus? Thats just one particular fictional character for that Religion. Every other religion has some other idea that they will go to heaven and everyone else who doesnt follow them will go to hell. What makes every religion believe only theirs is right while all others are wrong? Its just a mere accident at birth that you were this religion. Which belief could be right and which is wrong? I dont get how people could continue to believe in this while all the other religions are against them.

Most people like to hear that they are right, and they like to see themselves as superior. This is unfortunately one of the traits left over from the caveman days, a type of survival. Therefore, I believe that regarding religion, people like to see themselves as right in their beliefs, but since most religions have the same basic principles, there is no wrong one. Each person must just make that decision themselves as to what they want to believe, in a more powerful being, or not. As to the Heaven vs. Hell thing, it is considered to be the ultimate paradise to go to heaven, whereas Hell is the punishment. People just like to see other suffer while they triumph. We’re a cruel species.
